What is Putrada Ekadashi?
Putrada Ekadashi is a special day observed by Hindus twice a year. It falls on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) in the months of Paush and Shravan. In the Gregorian calendar, these months correspond to December or January for Paush and July or August for Shravan.

Why is it Important?
Hinduism places great importance on rituals performed during life events like birth and death. Specifically, funeral rites, which are believed to ensure the soul’s liberation, should be performed by a son. Therefore, having a son is considered essential for continuing these traditions.

Benefits of Observing Putrada Ekadashi Vrat:
For couples desiring a son, observing the Putrada Ekadashi fast is believed to help fulfill this wish. This practice is deeply rooted in the belief that performing these rituals secures a better afterlife.

Different Names of Putrada Ekadashi:
– In Shravan month, it is also known as Pavitropana Ekadashi or Pavitra Ekadashi, especially among the Vaishnava community.

How to Observe the Fast:
1. Fasting: Devotees fast on Ekadashi day.
2. Parana (Breaking the Fast):
– This is done the next day, after sunrise.
– It should be completed within the Dwadashi Tithi (the twelfth day).
– Avoid breaking the fast during Hari Vasara (the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi).
– The best time to break the fast is in the morning (Pratahkal). If not possible, it can be done later in the day (after Madhyahna, or midday).

Special Notes:
– Sometimes, Ekadashi fasting is suggested on two consecutive days.
– For families (Smartha), it is recommended to fast on the first day.
– The second day’s fast is suggested for monks (Sanyasis), widows, and those seeking Moksha (liberation).
– Devoted followers who wish to gain the love and affection of Lord Vishnu may fast on both days.

By observing Putrada Ekadashi with devotion and following these guidelines, devotees seek blessings for their families and spiritual growth.
